Further shocking rhetoric directed at migrants and asylum seekers crossing the US border has come from the President this week. But should we be shocked? Is the “build a wall; keep ‘em out” discourse simply the President’s bombastic interpretation of the openly hostile immigration policies implemented in recent years in the UK and Australia and the rise of far right protectionism in Italy, Austria and Germany? Trump wants to limit judicial challenge; there’s nothing new there. Appeal rights in the UK were drastically cut in 2015. Is Trump simply following the flock?
The confusion for families has been compounded by President Trump stepping up his rhetoric against immigrants. Over the weekend he said that immigrants should be deported without “judges or court cases” to stop people being able to “invade” the US.
