Employers are struggling to fill vacancies, according to the latest poll from the CIPD. Does this mean that employers should be responding now, ahead of the looming Brexit deadline?
The value of surveys and polls is always arguable, but with over 1,000 employer respondents, the current mood should be accurately reflected in the CIPD's report. With figures taken up to June this year, the chances are the position will be crystallised in the coming months. There are just fewer non-UK born workers in the UK than there were a year ago, and almost two thirds of these are European nationals.
Could this mean that rather than being seen as 'open for business' to the rest of the world, the UK is now a less attractive proposition than it has previously been? Perhaps. Only time will tell. But in the short to medium term, a shortage of workers at a time when unemployment is so low, means that wages are rising to attract staff.
The expectation is that the lower-skilled workforce will be hardest hit, but it is by no means limited. In our experience, nearly all strands of worker are being affected, from across professions and trades and up and down the management chain.
Reassuring your European national and your UK workforce, providing immigration guidance and general support to employees can all help in the fight to retain talented staff.
Keeping check on your own organisation's fluctuating workforce is also wise as the real bite of Brexit starts to impact.

As Brexit approaches, the CIPD says the shortage of both EU and non-EU migrants reflects a falling interest in the UK as a destination for migrant workers. And it said research among over 1,000 employers suggested that vacancies are becoming harder to fill. The squeeze is leading employers to increase pay rates, said the CIPD.
