Despite speculation that the plan to end free movement and introduce the new immigration system on 1 January 2021 would be postponed as a result of the coronavirus crisis, on 9 April 2020 the Government published guidance reinforcing the message to UK businesses to secure their Tier 2 licence in good time.
A licence will be needed for the future recruitment of European and non-European nationals. The numbers of UK businesses who will need a licence will increase. A licence typically takes 8 weeks to secure. Many businesses will not be looking ahead to 2021 as they struggle to deal with the immediate crisis. This will lead to a glut of applications towards the end of this year which will cause processing delays. This could delay a business' recruitment plans which may be vital at a time when businesses need to place the right people with key skills in role quickly in order to recover from the global shutdown.
Prudent businesses will be securing their licence now in order to get one step ahead of the competition and to be open to the global market on day one of the new immigration system.
